Assistant Surgeon General, Chief Nurse
Rear Admiral Aisha Mix was selected as Chief Nurse Officer in October 2019. As Chief Nurse Officer, RDML Mix advises the Office of the Surgeon General and the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services on the recruitment, assignment, deployment, retention, and career development of nurse professionals, and is responsible for providing leadership to U. S. Public Health Service (PHS) Commissioned Corps and civilian nurses.
With over 25 years in nursing, RDML Mix has performed as a clinician, public health practitioner, educator, and emergency manager, thereby rendering stellar contributions to nursing and public health throughout her career. RDML Mix’s varied assignments reflect her passion and focus on health equity, health workforce development, and community-level engagement to improve population health outcomes.
Currently, RDML Mix is detailed as a Senior Health Policy Administrator within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and serves as senior advisor for the PHS Minority Officers Liaison Council.
In support of the PHS Commissioned Corps, RDML Mix has served as Deputy Team Commander for Services Access Team – 5, and as part of the leadership team for Disaster Case Management operations following Hurricane Irene. In addition, she was selected to deploy to Monrovia, Liberia, as a member of the first PHS Commissioned Corps team to support the 2014 Ebola Response. Following Hurricanes Irma and Maria, RDML Mix assumed the role of field operations policy lead and developed a long-term strategic plan for federal recovery support in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
RDML Mix is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. At every opportunity, RDML Mix is a champion for PHS nurses, nursing as a profession, and nurses’ contributions across the care continuum. She remains connected to nursing education through faculty appointments in graduate-level public health nursing.
