ISC and its partners organised the 9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on 12-29 September 2023.
The role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be the central theme of the Summit. The objective is to develop and launch science collaborations to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030 and Local2030. The meeting will also prepare input for the United Nations Summit of the Future, which will take place during UNGA79 beginning on 12 September 2024.

Dr. Derya Buyuktanir Karacan received her Ph.D. degree in Economics and International Relations of the European Union from Ankara University, Turkey. After completing her Ph.D., she continued her studies in the Department of Government at Georgetown University, Washington DC, as a post-doctoral fellow between 2014 and 2015. Following her tenure at Georgetown University, she taught courses on global politics, introduction to international relations, and the European Union as an assistant professor in Turkey for three years, during which she also acted as the associate dean of the Faculty of Management. Besides her academic credentials, she also has 13 years of experience on different national and international projects on youth, development, and environment supported by the European Commission and the World Bank. Currently, Derya Buyuktanir Karacan is a visiting scholar at the Institute for International Science and Technology Policy under the Elliott School of International Affairs of George Washington University with a research focus on science diplomacy and the global competition for talent. She is also the project manager of the European Commission’s EURAXESS-North America initiative that aims to connect with European scientific diasporas and support researcher mobility and career development while enhancing research collaboration between Europe and the world.
