ISC and its partners organised the 9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on 12-29 September 2023.
The role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be the central theme of the Summit. The objective is to develop and launch science collaborations to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030 and Local2030. The meeting will also prepare input for the United Nations Summit of the Future, which will take place during UNGA79 beginning on 12 September 2024.

The Strategic Directions, which are directly related to the SDGs of the UN and Agenda 2063, are:
End of Poverty
The responsibility to end poverty in all its forms everywhere in Sierra Leone; By 2030, reduce
at least by half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions.
End of Hunger –
Focusing achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture;
Health –
Focusing on Ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages through conducting researches to produce positive results to Strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, development of vaccines and medicines for the communicable and non-communicable diseases that primarily affect Sierra Leone, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol in accordance with the Doha Declaration on the TRIPS Agreement and Public Health, which affirms the right of Sierra Leone to use to the full the provisions in the Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights regarding flexibilities to protect public health, and, in particular, provide access to medicines for all Sierra Leoneans; Strengthen the implementation of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control in Sierra Leone, as well as provide access to affordable essential medicines and vaccines, for Sierra Leone; Substantially increase health financing and the recruitment, development, training and retention of the health workforce in Sierra Leone.
Education –
Focusing inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all Sierra Leone through the enforcement of policies that promotes all girls and boys complete free, equitable and quality primary and secondary education leading to relevant and effective learning outcomes, ensure equal access for all women and men to affordable and quality technical, vocational and tertiary education, including university; eliminate gender disparities in education and ensure equal access to all levels of education
and vocational training for the vulnerable, including persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and children in vulnerable situation;
Gender Equality –
Focusing on ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life eliminating
all harmful practices, such as child, early and forced marriage and female genital mutilation;
Clean Water –
Focusing on achieving national and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all through substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity, access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and saf
