ISC and its partners organised the 9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on 12-29 September 2023.
The role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be the central theme of the Summit. The objective is to develop and launch science collaborations to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030 and Local2030. The meeting will also prepare input for the United Nations Summit of the Future, which will take place during UNGA79 beginning on 12 September 2024.

In 2023, the European Union’s European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG), the International Financial Reporting Standard’s (IFRS) International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) each published new guidance for how companies within their jurisdictions account for and report upon their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts. As the UN Sustainable Development Goals transition into a new global model focused beyond 2030, this workshop will explore ideas and insights for how the integration of these sustainability reporting standards and frameworks with broader discussions around purpose, value, and impact measurement can serve as a guide for building this post-SDGs model.

In this workshop we will introduce the latest advances in purpose, value measurement, sustainability disclosure reporting and their impacts on how businesses and governments can effectively operate within increasingly important, but complex, sustainability standards and frameworks. We will then place these international initiatives into the context of Japan’s historical embrace of a more socially conscious approach to business and explore how these ideas could, in turn, help guide future global discussions around these critical topics. Finally, this workshop will offer ideas and insights into how businesses not only within Japan and Asia, but also around the world can integrate, enhance, and implement value-focused sustainability initiatives going forward.

This event will bring together some of the world's top experts in purpose, value measurement and scoring, sustainability, and ESG issues to discuss, debate, and brainstorm new approaches to value creation, responsible business, and sustainability initiatives and offer ideas and models for their implementation in 2024 and beyond. The ideas discussed in this workshop will serve as the foundation for a more in-depth discussion held in Osaka, Japan in November 2023.

Program:
  • Session 1: What’s the difference? EFRAG and ISSB standards and measurements and their relationship to the SDGs
  • Session 2: Purpose, wellbeing, and sustainability
  • Session 3: A new “third way”? An alternative scoring model and business philosophy from Japan
  • Session 4: Going forward: Inter-regional cooperation across public policy and private sectors
  • Session 5: Panel discussion

All SDGs will be covered in this workshop, with a focus on SDG17, partnership for achieving these goals in their entirety.
