ISC and its partners organised the 9th edition of the Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) on 12-29 September 2023.
The role and contribution of science to attaining the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be the central theme of the Summit. The objective is to develop and launch science collaborations to demonstrate global science mechanisms and activities to support the attainment of the UN SDGs, Agenda 2030 and Local2030. The meeting will also prepare input for the United Nations Summit of the Future, which will take place during UNGA79 beginning on 12 September 2024.

The CBD Global Biodiversity Framework reflects an encouraging ambition toward saving species, but in many cases capacity continues to fall short of this vision. Reverse the Red is committed to supporting national players in boosting capacity and strategically achieving a tenfold reduction in species risk and rate of extinction.

Reverse the Red is a strategic initiative that brings together a diverse coalition of leading scientists, advocates, and partners committed to using a data-driven and science-based approach to assess, plan, and act for species conservation.

Reverse the Red partners are joining forces to work together at national level in order to invite key stakeholders to review the current status of in-country species conservation, listen to experiences on what is working and to detect where more support is needed to make the biggest positive impact on the targets of the Global Biodiversity Framework.
During this session we will explore the SSC National Species Specialists Group model as a way to create and mobilize national capacity and to demonstrate that through clear, creative target setting, ambitious capacity building and increased collaborative action, we can reverse the negative trends in biodiversity loss.
