Ukraine and its people are being devastated by Russia's invasion. The Ukrainian science community is suffering, with many higher education institutions damaged, destroyed, or forced to relocate, while many students, faculty, and staff members have joined the resistance or migrated abroad. Those who continue studying, researching, or teaching in Ukraine face bombardment and intermittent loss of electricity, heat, and water. Nevertheless, Ukrainian science is persevering.

This session aims to demonstrate how the Ukrainian science community and its international counterpart are mobilizing while partnering with Ukraine’s civil society, government, and business to support the resistance and prepare for the country’s recovery and future development. New opportunities are arising for domestic and international partnerships among science, policy, and planning that can help Ukraine develop innovative recovery strategies and meet its sustainable development goals. Taking advantage of these opportunities is crucial not only for recovering from the war-induced disasters but also preparing for new environmental and socio-economic challenges of the 21st century.
